Pixel Art & Dither

Pixelate photos with retro palettes (Game Boy, CGA, PICO-8, NES, C64) and Floyd-Steinberg, Atkinson or Bayer dithering.

Free, no uploads, no sign-up. Runs 100% in your browser.

How Pixel Art & Dither works

The image is scaled down to blocks, then every block is mapped to the closest colour in the chosen palette, either a classic console palette or an automatic one built with median-cut. Error-diffusion or ordered dithering keeps gradients smooth with few colours.

Input: JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF. Output: PNG, JPG, WEBP.

How to use Pixel Art & Dither

  1. Drop an image.
  2. Set the pixel size and pick a palette.
  3. Choose a dithering method.
  4. Download at original size, or at 1 pixel per block for game sprites.

Tips

  • Save as PNG; JPG blurs hard pixel edges.
  • Atkinson dithering gives the classic early Mac look.
