Extract Subtitles

Pull embedded subtitle tracks out of MKV, MP4 and MOV videos as SRT, VTT, ASS and more.

Free, no uploads, no sign-up. Runs 100% in your browser.

How Extract Subtitles works

The sound is processed by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser. The engine (about 30 MB) downloads the first time and is cached after that, so nothing is ever uploaded. Text tracks (SubRip, ASS, mov_text, WebVTT) are extracted. Picture-based tracks such as PGS and VobSub are listed but need OCR.

Input: MKV, MP4, MOV, WEBM, M4V, TS. Output: SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA, SBV, LRC, SMI, TTML, JSON, CSV, TXT.

How to use Extract Subtitles

  1. Drop a video.
  2. Wait while the tracks are found and read.
  3. Pick the output format and download each track, or all as a ZIP.

Tips

  • Nothing is uploaded. Your files stay in this browser tab.

Extract Subtitles FAQ

Are my files uploaded?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser tab. Files are read from your disk into memory and the result is generated locally.
Is it free? Are there limits or watermarks?
Free and open source (MIT). There are no file-size caps, daily quotas, accounts or watermarks.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page (and any engine it needs) has loaded, it keeps working without a connection thanks to the service worker cache.
